97 Monte Computer Codes- Where R They?

OK, I took my car to Autozone to get the codes. The guy hooked up the reader, turned the key, and it read 2 codes, both were EVP Emission Control System Malfunction codes, and if I read it right they were 0404 and 0440 but he said they both read 0404. Anywhere I can find these codes listed as well as the 7 or 8-step method of confirming and correcting the problem? Also, how do you reset the computer once you've made the repairs so the light goes off?

Re: 97 Monte Computer Codes- Where R They?

From the codes it looks like it may have been as simple as your gas cap was not put on tightly after refueling. If this was the problem tighten your gas cap and the light should go off by the next tank full. Hope that helps

Re: 97 Monte Computer Codes- Where R They?

Evap codes are most commonly the gas cap, either the cap is too tight - no air is getting through, or not tight enough. If you drive country dusty roads, take the cap off and soak it in dawn, a trick i learned from my gm dealer. However, there are other problems that can cause an Evap code......vacuum leak or a blockage going to the purge canister.

Exclamation Re: 97 Monte Computer Codes- Where R They?

The cap cannot be too tight, the tank is sealed and purged/vented as commanded by the pcm, no such thing as the cap not letting air in.

Re: 97 Monte Computer Codes- Where R They?

Hi guys my Check Engine Light is on and I know the code. I did a search and found this forum. The code is PO441 . I tried the gas cap thing and it is still on. I replaced the gas cap no change. Does anyone know what else it could be. I have The 96 Z34
I did notice that I am adding coolent more than usual. But can not find a leak under the car. Could it be a gasket leak of some kind. I appriciate the help guys.
Thanks

If you're losing coolant and there is no external evidence, get the car to a shop immediately! These engines are (in)famous for leaking intake manifold gaskets (and blown head gaskets) which allow the coolant to get into the oil. The oil loses its lubricity causing the engine to quickly self destruct. Catch it now while it's "only" $500 before it becomes $3000.
