TT Makes Sputter Sound While Shifting...

I have a 2001 TT Turbo Quattro. When I am accelerating and press the clutch in to shift, my turbo/engine makes a sputtering sound as the engine winds down before engaging the clutch again. I asked the Audi dealer what it was and they just said ït just makes that sound and there isnt anything we can do." This doesnt seem right to me - its not the normal sleek turbo sound...its really a sputter. Is any one experiencing a sputtering sound like this and what can be done to fix it? Thanks!!
