The gear ratio (transmission) just serves the purpose of multiplying the torque so as to assist in fast acceleration and then to a final ratio of one to one that is a direct relationship to engine speed, or an overdrive <1:1 which reduces the required engine speed to drive the car at speed but lacks the acceleration of the lower gears.

The different gears just serve as a smooth transition so as to allow for good acceleration at different speeds as well as good mileage at higher speeds.

If you're talking about rear end gear ratio then the higher the number, the faster you will accelerate but you will not have as high a top speed. Example: 4.10>3.42 for acceleration but 3.42>4.10 for top speed and better mileage.

Hope this helps you out.

Depends on what your rear end gears are. You might have 3.42, you might have 3.73. What rpm are you running at at say 45, 60?

Yeah, I got tired of my gauges not working so I just bought some new Auto Meter gauges. I like them much, much, much better.
