volvo 850 starter

I installed a new starter and when i connect the battery cable, the starter spins without the key in the ignition. Does anyone know what causes this?

Sylenoid (sp?) is going bad or the relay is stuck. Get a manual and find the relay in there and see if you hear it click when you flip the key to on.
