2000 Sportage Engine Design and control
Can anyone tell me if the 2.0liter engine in the 2000 sportage is a kia designed engine, or some other manufacturer originally?
Also, I am looking to see if there is anyone who knows if the ECU/ECM/PTC(?) is "flashable" so that some of the mapping can be changed. I would love to be able to change the shift points for the transmission. Oh, one other question I have not seen in the forums...Does anyone experience a long second gear on acceleration (auto trans) when their vehicle is cold? I am told that this is normal in a trans with cold fluid. I have never experienced this in any of my other vehicles with auto trans'... Thanks! |

Re: 2000 Sportage Engine Design and control
The engine is based on Mazda FE3 motor (built under licence)
Both the power/eco button and the hold button change shift points. WHen HOLD is ON, it starts in 2nd and keeps uo to rather high revs. WHen HOLD is off (will then start in 1st) , shift points are normal. POWER setting will shift at higher rpm than ECO. It will not shift to 4th until engine temp reaches 140°F.......ehh...after a more thorough check, rather 155°

I do have to say though, I think maybe the trans fluid has to warm to 140°F, becuase I have let the vehicle idle in the driveway until the idiot guage was in the middle of the temp range. My assumption is that the normal operating temp of the engine is higher than 140°F, maybe not. The trans still takes a long time to shift. I have had it checked on three different occasions and am told it is normal, so I guess I am being a--- retentive. Thanks again! |

Re: 2000 Sportage Engine Design and control
I don't think that's too abnormal, mine stays in 2nd for a while till it warms up when the engine is cold. I measured the distance to be about 2 miles in a straight run. I know if I reach a certin sign down the road, it shifts then.
If any one needs an automatic tranny for a 2000 Sportage 2WD, with 17,000 miles on it, I sure would like to get it out of my garage. it's on a pallet ready to go. I bought it on eBay thinking I needed it, turned out to be just a hanger bearing. I put it on eBay a few times, but I guess these trannys just don't go bad. this was from a totaled wreck. I am in LI, NY. |
