staining brass

I have just made some nice leaf springs for my 1/8th scale pocher alfa in brass. I seem to rem on here some while back about a chemical that would stain brass to a black clolor?.. painting them would be no good really as they are all seperate parts that bolt together and would chip on assembley..

I was actually fixin' to ask about this same stuff, and what metals it worked on, because it would be killer for blackening PE mesh, instead of painting. We all know what a PITA it is to paint mesh, when the paint all gets into the holes and junk.

Willimo - Blacken it is basically Selenic acid, (from wikipedia: H2SeO4, is an oxygen acid of selenium. Selenic acid is analogous to sulfuric acid and has similar properties; however, it is a stronger oxidizer.)

Sorry to interoupt but I have looked at the link and saw that different solutions work on different metals. Since I allready came out stupid with this last sentence I may do it again, what is white metal made of (soldier, iron, Pb (don't know English word, this is chemical sign), or something else) and which acid would eork on it (white metal).

If you are talking about white metal as in pewter that is mostly tin there is a chemical oxidising process that is made up with nitric acid 5% by volume and copper sulphate 1/3 oz/gal (oz av & US gallon. Parts are simply immersed until the darkness required is achieved then rinsed abd dried.
