If I remember right, US models have a solenoid inhibiting the stick movement, ctrl box behind pass side panel. Its control needs input from brake pedal and/or theft inhibit. See FSM.

Take cover off (around stick) and check out the mech. You may take it off (EU models havent got it) but I think its good safety device, so better check/repair the real cause.

R U parking U'r max on a hill? If so, this slightly jams park gear in place, set e-brake b4 placing in park and shift out of park before dis-engaging e-brake.

Thanks for the reply.
No, not parked on a hill.

I think it might have something to do with putting your foot on the brake before starting the car?

It hasn't really done it much lately?

Re: 96 SE with At. trans sticks in park?

If its affected by pedal than it could be someone spilled a big gulp out of a cup holder all over the shifter. (the pedal lockout soloniod is usually right there) My wife did this to my 96 firebird and this liquid glue (60oz's of dr.pepper I believe it was, was like a soda bomb going off) jammed up and eventually broke the shift cable. When I took apart everything was just covered including shift lock soloniod. This was just another added bonus to the 5 hours of clean up spent on dashboard, vents and climate controls that night. (teardown and re-assembly) At least she was with me when the cable snapped and left us at a gas station on a hot summer day.
