Parking break seized?

I havnt driven the danger ranger in sometime, so I deicided to take it out the other day. It starte dup fine, but when I put it in drive it went nowhere. When I pressed on the accelorator the back end chirped on the pavement and slid to the right.
My natural assumption would be the parking break, however, I have never once used the parking break in this vehicle. The ruck did go through snow and salt before I put it away for a few weeks.
So my question is, can the parking break just lock up like that? Could it be the drum break? Just trying to get an idea of what kind of things to look for if the first couple of places I look are functioning correctly. Any input?

Thanks guys and gals
JP

Re: Parking break seized?

Parking brake cables sometimes sieze, in winter they can freeze, however if it has never been applied then the cable would sieze in the unapplied position. I would jack the rear end up just enough to clear the tires at put it in drive to see ifone wheel seems to be locked up. I have had hardware break in the drum before, I guess it could be possible for it to lock up the brake. If you find out wich side is locking up, pull the brake drumm off and hope all the hardware doesn't fall out of the drum when you do like it did to me

Re: Parking break seized?

prob water froze and rusted up while sitting. it should break loose if you give it enough gas. i would inspect it after that.

Re: Parking break seized?

Awesome, thanks for the info guys. It's warm enough today to go mess with it, I'll take a look at it and see what I find, post my findings.

Again thanks for the feedback

Re: Parking break seized?

Had one rear wheel sieze up on me one time. Turned out that a piece of the rear shoe broke off and lodged between the shoe and the drum. Just a thought

Re: Parking break seized?

Well finally got the drum off today, had to retract the star wheel and all that funs stuff.
One pad was "welded" to the drum...ehh
One pad I picked off of the shoe with my fingers, so more or less a complete brake job is in need lol!
This should be interesting, never done drum brakes before, and I imagne I will probally need atleast one new drum.
Any advice for a drum brake virgin?

Thanks again fellas.

You'll be fine just as long as you do one side at a time. You'll be toast if you can't remember a specific detail in the middle of getting them back on there. Kind of like when people change their wires and remove all of them, then can't remember how the firing order went .

Re: Parking break seized?

Well the Danger Ranger is back in action! I got the rear drum breaks finished up last night. Took me about 3 hours to do it (back and forth, which spring goes where?), but it wasnt to bad.

Thanks for the help guys.
