What year is your Alero and engine size?

DTC P1404 is typically an EGR valve circuit performance error for certain GM cars.

Oops, sorry for not including that.
It's a 2001 3.4L (I think it's GL2 or GLS, not sure )

OK, so it is definitely an EGR valve related problem. It is not closing completely....either stuck open or partially. You can remove it and clean the pintle with carb cleaner, then lube the pintle with WD40. Re-install.

Then try this relearn procedure. It will have to relearn the pintle closed position. Do not reset with a scanner if you are getting P1404 before running this procedure:

With engine off, disconnect the electrical connector to EGR valve, take key to on, reset DTC error codes with scanner and immediately take the key to off position. Then re-connect electrical connector for EGR and take the key back to on.

Hopefully, the code will stay off and not return, otherwise you may need a new EGR valve. Good luck!
