Re: 96 Eclipse not starting

Have you been having any problems with the car lately? When you say you can hear the starter trying to start it do you mean that you can hear just the starter going but the car will not turn over, or the car turns over and will not start up? Like xavier said, you need fuel, spark, and air for a car to run. Make sure you're getting fuel to the cylinders and also make sure you're getting spark at the end of the spark plugs. If you're getting both fuel and spark, it's time for a compression test but a car wouldn't just die because of a loss of compression unless you lost timing.

Re: 96 Eclipse not starting

if the alternator is dead would that cause the car not to start?

i thought if i jump start it that it would turn over

the battery is dead no juice!

the spark plugs look pretty bad
it starts when i put the jumper cables on but it will not continue running

Re: 96 Eclipse not starting

First off... I do not think a dead alternator would prevent your car from starting however it would drain your battery(dead battery = no start). You might want to get new plugs(if they look bad) and probably an alternator. However, I am not a mechanic just my Lastley, I'm not trying to be the ass here but, this post should be in Problem Diagnosis not Performance.

Re: 96 Eclipse not starting

Get new plug wires if they look bad, pull the plugs and replace those too while you're at it. A dead alternator wouldn't have anything to do with the car not starting if you charge the battery. If the battery is old, replace it with a new one as it likely won't hold a charge anymore. Then if it dies while running, time for a new alternator.

Re: 96 Eclipse not starting

if u can hear the motor trying to turn over its more then likely not your batter id still stay on the lines of ignition sequence.

Re: 96 Eclipse not starting

It turns over when he connects jumper cables and then quits when he disconnects them.

Re: 96 Eclipse not starting

mine did the same thing when i was switching garages... are the terminals tight on ur battery? the positive one was loose on mine and it jumped fine then when the cables came off it died. try tightening them, and if that doesnt work, like everyone else said its probably the battery.
