ABS light on - no fault codes?

I got an ABS light on today that cleared once I had stopped and restarted the engine. I did the key on-off-on-off-on bite check and only got code 55 - test complete. Light stayed on during two bite check cycles, but cleared when engine restarted. I had this happen several months ago, again, with no fault codes.
Any thoughts of impending failure of any particular ABS system component?

Use to get it all the time while wheeling... little water would find it's way somewhere, illuminate the light, and after a key cycle it went off. Never figured out what caused it. Check relays and fuses... wire brush and electro-clean everything you can see... should go away no problem. I found that even when it was illuminated I still had ABS. Other solution would be to remove the ABS relay (if you don't mind not having it).

Wet brakes pads from driving in snow? Been out wheeling through a swamp? Yeah it might light up. Doesn't mean for sure there's a problem.

got mud in the abs rings?

spray that down with a high pressure spray and I bet you're good to go

first of all,you need a scanner to get abs codes.the key trick only gets engine codes.secondly,mud in the tone rings wont affect it,the sensors use magnetism and last time I checked,mud was not metallic.It could be a lot of things so you need to get the code(s)

xj31 is correct, You will not find ABS codes with the key on-off procedure nor with an OBD scanner. ABS code scanning requires the use of a Snap-on type scanner [ very expensive ]. Not having one myself I used the diagnostic flow chart procedure from the Factory shop manual. Using a digital multi-meter I determined that the problem was the ABS CONTROL UNIT. This was verified by the eventual use of a Snap-on scanner by a local shop. Read my response to btebutt's post on ABS CONTROL UNITS. Good Luck!

although it is rare to happen i just recently had a 98 jeep in my shop where the ABS ring was actually cracked causing the ABS to activate. Since there was basically a chunk missing out of the ring the sensor thought that the wheel was locking up there for engaged the ABS. If this happens then no scan tool will find it, even the snap-on scan tool, because the ABS was doing just what it should engage when it sensed the ring had stopped rotating.

If Iam right you have the Teves Mark 20 System. As a quick diagnostic check if the light comes on when you start the engine and stays on before you are moving usally a serious condition such as controller pump ass. If the light comes on when you are moving it usally is related to a wheel sensor problem. You will need a Scan Tool with ABS capability to access the code or codes. Ive seen ice get build up and give a false reading maybe mud could do it.
