Buying a BMW 750IL
I've been looking into purchasing a pre-owned BMW 7 series and ran into a 750IL that appears to be in excellent condition.
The only thing is, Im having a hard time finding info on these cars, alot of my searches show up info on the 740il. So as much help would be appreciated- the car in question has 81k miles and is going for $20k. What are things I should be looking at in this car? Any known trans/engine/drivetrain problems? Also how does the V12 perform? Also, if you have any kind of link with complete standard features and options for this car, it would be helpful as well. Thank you and I look forward to being a fellow 7 Series owner! |

Re: Buying a BMW 750IL
Just a quick tip, 750's have 2 of everything, and cost 2x more. Ide opt for the 740 before even thinking of getting a 750

The 750iL is pretty quick for how big it is, and will outperform the 740iL, but it isn't going to be nearly as reliable. If you are in it for the luxury aspect, the 740iL is a better buy then the 750iL.

Re: Buying a BMW 750IL
Having owned a 1988 750 for four years (1991-2005) I can say they are great cars, however they are pricey to maintain (as are all 7ers save the 735i). Two EML, DKW (throttle bodies) fuel pumps and filters, etc. They seem to eat driveshafts at about 10 years and upper control arm bushings at 70,000 miles and then the rear struts are load leveling and not inexpensive (mine had the hydraulic struts at about $350 each). I converted the AC to 134,replaced driveshaft and front strut inserts, one rear strut, fan clutch and all radiator and heater hoses as well as the rubber fuel lines, and also twop MAF (used) in the time I owned the car. She ran great (should right) and would give me about 21 MPG at 70-75. If you want a good 7er of E32 vintage I would opt for a 735i if yu want a V8 avoid the 1994-1995 M60 engines dueto the NIKASIL issue.
Spent my Pfennig so I am out of here, if you want more data on the 750, EMail me at [email protected]. |

So, I'm in the UK and it seems from a lot of fellow 7 owners that while a great many US customers have experienced problems and disappointment with the 750IL, the same is not true in Europe. The other thing is to bear in mind is that to my mind, $20,000 seems really steep. How old is it? Is it an E38 ('94-'01)? Or is it a high-miler E65 (current generation)? I got mine with 100k on the clock and full history and full spec. for £4,600, the equivalent of $8,016. Maybe it's just symptomatic of our respective used-car markets. After all, we're currently paying the equivalent of $7.37 per gallon in the UK so there's not much of a market for gas guzzlers! Let me know which generation you're looking at and I'll try and find you some detailed info.
