I,m considering buying a neon R/T the only thing with the car is that it is on synthetic oil. Can I change it to regular, if yes how?

Hey there,
You can change the oil by simply telling your friendly helper at your local oil and lube place to just put in regular oil the first time you get the oil changed in it. I personally like synthetic, better for the engine in general, may cost a few bucks more, but it's well worth the extra dough. And yes buy an R/T they are a fun little car, i have a 98 and they are great little cars, and with a little work can really get up and go. Peace.... :bandit: |

Dodge recommends using synthetic oil in your Neon's engine.
Most Neon owners I know of use Mopar's 5W-30 Tri-Synthetic with a Napa Gold oil filter....I use the K&N Performance oil filter and 5W-30 Tri-Synthetic myself. However everybody's different...some ppl use Amsoil, etc... Just get a decent oil brand, for your car's sake.

I use Mobil1 5W-30 synthetic. If you are driving your car hard, or drive in a lot of stop-n-go traffic (aka rush hour) synthetic is the way to go. Not only is it better in general, but you can also go a little longer between oil changes...I still change every 3K miles because Phoenix is dusty and hot, harsh conditions for cars.

I also use synthetic, and in Canada where the temperature can dip down to minus 40 with the windchill overnight, most won't believe it, but my vehicles will cruntch on the first turn and then turn over just like it,s a normal summer day. My older caravan with 300,000 klms, is still running great. I have heard that mobil is the only true synthetic and would appreciate some feedback. I have been using castrol out here. Please respond.

Keep on using synthetic.
The key is to change your oil change intervals to 7000miles with the oil and swap in a new filter every 3500miles. You don't change synthetic at 3000miles. In essence, properly utilising synthetic oil is CHEAPER than using standard oil.

neonglow, on another note, I'd keep going with the synthetic oil. If it is Mobil 1, then change the filter every 5000 miles and top off the oil, then change the oil every 10,000 miles. I know one neon owner who autocrosses his neon and thats what he has been doing for over 150,000 miles now. |

True Synthetics are as follows:
Amsoil Mobil1 Redline Royal purple is part GrpIII and for the money is not worth the premium price for an oil that is only partly true synthetic.

Actually it is a Group 4 and 5 with a Group 3 basestock.
Not true 100% PAO or synthetic ester liek the ones I listed.

Stay with the Synthetic.
I usually change the filter and top off at 3,000 miles and then do a complete change (oil and filter) at 6,000. Some engines have sludge problems and tend to fail a low mileage. Those owners have discovered that useing synthetic prevents the problem from occuring. The most notable engine I know of for sudden total failure from sludge is the Dodge 2.7l V6. Most other engines don't have this trouble, but if synthetic can keep a poorly engineered engine running, it surely will provide extra protection for your Hi-Rev Bonzai runs. |
