How clogged can an EGR valve be?

The EGR valve in my 1994 Metro was clogged. Really clogged. The bigger hose going up to the EGR Vacuum Modulator Valve was clogged I had to run a screw driver thru it to clear it out. I had to use a drill bit to clean out the nipple where that hose connects to the EGR valve. I broke big chunks of build up off the inside of the two holes that match up to the intake manifold and then scraped it down to bare metal with a screwdriver. Then I tried to clean out the two holes in the manifold. One was not to bad and seems to be clear however the other one that heads off in the direction of the cylinder head was completely clogged. I worked on it for about 20 minutes with a piece of a coat hanger and I still don't think I have it clear. How can I clear this area add how will I know when it is clear?

Remove the EGR valve , go to the parts store and buy a quart of engine flush and submerge the EGR valve overnight in it , this will disolve and remove alot of carbon build up, then buy some carburator spray cleaner and spray alot of it in the EGR holes that should take care of the most carbon build up.

Re: How clogged can an EGR valve be?

I recently rebuilt a head for my 95 Metro. During the process I discovered the EGR passage that goes from the front to the back thru the Driver's side of the head. It was completely blocked. To clean this, you would have to remove the exhaust manifold and clear the passage. Also, there is a short section in the exhaust manifold itself that probably has to be cleared. Unless you cleared all passages, I don't believe your EGR will be effective.

use an old piece of emergency brake cable on a drill. stick one end in the chuck and fray the other end of the cable. then just push it in the egr passages and keep drillin
