Talking 90 Probe idling high occasionally

Hello fellow Proberz,
Unlike all you other hot shots, I own a basic 4cyl GL . 2.2l. It runs quite well considering the problems I'm about to mention. On going, not a huge concern because I'm used to it and I have adjusted my driving habits accordingly. The engine will pick up rpms on its own for maybe 5-10 minutes. It gets as high as 2000 or so. Which like I mentioned, is not too much of a concern. Itdoes however get tricky at a red light. When begining from a stop position, I must slowly release the clutch maintain a good constent pressure of fuel , or my baby will jerk and or stall. If stall occurs, hard to startup again immediatly. But because I'm so used to driving my ghetto auto, I can usually start the car within a few quick minutes. It's tricky though because I must give it fuel as soon as it barely catches. I've been told, coolant temp. sensor. Ok so I bought one but where do I install it. Also first start of the day wheathercold or not...it revs a bit too high for my liking. I noticed a cpl of days ago a billow of thick white smoke hurdling out of my exaust.. and a little excaping from the hood.(not much though). Eventually the high idle slows down and I'm on my way..
Problem #2. Front drivers side tire/cv joint???? makes noise when turning either direction. Do I look for a new axle? At times is rattles even when not in a turn. I think thats about it for now. I appreciate your time for reading my problems and I look forward to a responce soon..

Coolant Temperature Sensor: UNDER HOOD, DRIVER SIDE, UPPER ENGINE AREA, MOUNTED IN
WATER OUTLET second you need to have vacuum tested for leaks. and then look into IAC and/or Map sensor
