Amp for my L5
Today I ordered 2 Kicker S12L5's with dual 4 ohms voice coils. One thing that confused me was in the listing it shows it can handle 600 rms, and on the box in the picture you can see 4 ohm listed pretty big but you can not see what rms it's listed at. So would it be safe to assume that it is 600 rms at 4 ohm or should it be more like 300 at 4 ohm and you would have to run 2 ohm to get 600. I would imagine this is pretty important because if you have too litte resistance it will overpower the speaker and blow it. So that is the first question, the next is what amp would you guys recommend for just the 1 12". My buddy also has a 12 inch L5 and is running a Kicker KX600.1, but I don't know what ohm he is running. I'm not sure if Kicker amps are any good but the seem awful expensive. The cheapest I could find that KX600.1 was like $350. But I'm open to any recommendations you guys have.
Here's the link to the speakers. http://cgi.ebay.com/NEW-2-Kicker-L5-...QQcmdZViewItem |

Re: Amp for my L5
Don't buy kicker unless you want to spend the money.
Don't buy sony. MTX, eh, maybe. Profile is good and way cheap. Alpine is good but not cheap. I'm using a Pioneer amp right now (good amp).

im not positive i read this right so correct me if im wrong but it sounds like your asking if teh impedence of the speaker determines how much wattage it can take. the answer is no. the sub can take 600 at any impedence. the number of ohms the amp sees determines how much power the amp can give it. you need an amp that gives 1200 or so watts at either 4 ohm or 1 ohm. Since you have 350 to spend i have a terrific recommendation for you. http://edesignaudio.com/product.php?cid=4&pid=6&cur=USD this amp would be perfect even though its still 350 bucks. Which is the same price as your buddies but has 4-5 times as much power depending on voltage and would slam those L5s. Port them, hook up this amp and 'wang'

Re: Amp for my L5
So then how come the sub is marked to handle 4 ohm? Does that not matter to anything? Then some of the amps you guys recommended were 2 channel, am I going to benefit from a 2 channel or mono amp in any way?

Re: Amp for my L5
as stated earlier, the ohms or impedance determines how much power the amp will put out. For subs, you're best bet is to buy a class D mono amp and wire it for typically 1 ohm. You get them most watts per dollar that way,

Re: Amp for my L5
and 2 D4 subs can be ran 2 x 2ohm or 1x1ohm or 2x 8ohm or 1x 16 ohm...in car audio the later is almsot never used. you need around 1000w @ 1ohm x1 or 500w @ 2ohm x2...

Re: Amp for my L5
So I have 2 of those 12" L5's coming. I was gonna sell one to my buddy and keep one for myself. Do you think it would be worth it to keep both. I have an extended cab S-10 so I'm not sure if I have enough room behind the seats. I had one in my truck just to see what it sounded like and it sounded real good but do you think I would benefit that much from having that extra speaker or will it just be overkill? Then would I have to run 1/0 for 2 speakers instead of the 4g I was gonna run?

Re: Amp for my L5
the amp is a kicker kx1200.1 the best for the money but the solobarics they all handle 750rms even the 10s handle that. but u can put 20% more on the conts. without blowing your subs i'g going to buy the s12l5 and put them on the kx1200.1

Re: Amp for my L5
I'd keep both subs since you have an extended cab and will have plenty of room to build a box for both of them. With subs I haven't seen anything yet that's overkill as when I had a 99 extended cab s10 I had 4 12" jl's and a ppi amp built into a wall behind the seats. As for an amp that will push those subs check out these two Lanzar amps.
http://www.onlinecarstereo.com/CarAu...roductID=16432 http://www.onlinecarstereo.com/CarAu...roductID=12790 Either of those will provide enough power to make those subs sound real good and the best bet is wire both of them down to 1 ohm and have one amp that's 1 ohm stable pushing them. |

Re: Amp for my L5
Well, so far basically everyone has ignored your actual first post.
You are going to be using ONE Dual4ohm Kicker 12L5. The rms is 600, and since it's a dual4ohm speaker, it will present the amp with a final 2ohm load. You want to look into an amp that does 600watts rms @2ohms for your single dual4ohm 12L5. Look into mono amplifiers: Alpine Kicker MTX JBL Phoenix Gold Orion Just to name a few. Try to look for them NEW on an ebay store, you'll pay a lot less than retail as you've already found out. NG |

Re: Amp for my L5
The new E-bay stores are very good. That is where I bought the speakers from.
