did it just start doing it? what's the story behind the car? was it sitting for a long time?

I'm sure you've checked but almost sounds like incorrect firing order. It's easy to have it wrong, change the wires, plugs, or cap, and keep it wrong.

It sounds like your Timeing is off.
The same thing happend too me and i found the rottor was off 180 deg. |
