Re: A new Firebird, much closer to a REALITY!!!

Speculation.

As much as I am for a 5th gen....I just don't see it happening.

Spies?? Just a tactic to try to show GM that the public is interested. Until I hear anything from GM....I won't believe it.

Re: A new Firebird, much closer to a REALITY!!!

From what I've learned in reading and hearing what some folks(with close ties)to GM have said, I'm with Mr. Lous....

Canada's St. Theresa(sp?)plant "had" the contract for any and all F cars GM built or "would" be ever building. In an effort to "sweeten" the deal w/that plant, GM signed over ownership rights of the names Camaro/Firebird to the plant/Canadian gov't. for as long as they were being produced, and that GM could not/would not ever be able to use the name unless it was built by the St. Theresa plant and their Union in Canada. Kinda' makes you wonder if GM "knew" all along that the F car's time was limited and was just using St. Theresa like a cheap hooker.

I believe the names died with the closing and subsequent demolition of the St. Theresa plant, and unless there is some sort of loophole/time statute clause, IMHO all this is just optomisic hype.

With that said, there sure are a bunch of renditions/protoype photos floating around in cyberspace....

Not holding my breath.... but WILL be first in line w/a deposit "IF" it comes to fruition.

Re: A new Firebird, much closer to a REALITY!!!

I read an article about the GTO on page 18 of this months Motor Trend. It was an article actually about the new Camaro, but on the first page of it, it talked about all plans to build the 08 GTO had been scrapped. I don't have the actual magazine yet, it's at my parents house, I read it in the news stands. This does, however, leave room for a Firebird!!!

Oh, and GM hasn't said "the TA is coming back" like for sure, but if you believe this spie article I posted on my original post and some other "insider" things I've heard it is a definate possibilty. Here is the 1 post that REALLY got me pumped. It was posted over on transamcountry.com in a thread I started with the same spie article. Oh and when you read it, when it says "kevin's concept" that is my avatar and he is a member of TAcountry.com who actually drew it (and I started a thread about it on here awhile back)!!..............

Posted by TexasT/A's on tacountry.com:
"I went to the Houston Auto Show today armed with my digital camera and a print out of Kevins T/A concept. I was going to hold the photo up and take a picture of it and the Camaro together, sigh, the batteries in the camera were dead, so being an outstanding member of the male species I turned and blamed the wife.

I still held the picture up to compare and it caused quite a stir around me. People started asking if I got the pic at the Pontiac booth, I told them no and they were all disappointed. Everyone thought it was a better car than the Camaro, although that car really did look good up close and personal, they brought the red one.

Then a guy in a suit came up to me and said he would like to see the picture of Kevins car. He said he worked for GM and was overseeing the closing of the show tommorrow. I handed it to him and he said he has seen it before. He said after the Camaro concept car came out there was an outpouring of emails wondering about the Firebird line. Then they started seeing all the different photo chops of the Camaro made into a Trans Am and were impressed themselves. He specifically said Kevins picture stood out the most.

I told him it was sad that Mr. Lutz has pronounced the death of the Firebird line and he said, "don't be so sure of that". He then proceeded to talk about how disappointing the GTO has been and the need for GM to have a true retro car to compete with Ford and Mopar. He then gave me this kernel of hope for the future, he said that there are three new designs in the Firebird line and a decision is awaiting for one of them to be chosen. They are taking a wait and see attitude to see if there truly is a demand for the Firebird and if there is they will release the design. I told him they should release all three concepts and let the public decide, then they will see the demand.

I regret I did not get the guys name, but he seemed knowledgeable on the cars, he was pressed for time so I could not grill him on specifics. I take what he said with a grain of salt, I don't want false hopes to arise, but I sure do hope he was stating fact and not fiction. Fingers crossed.
":applause: :applause:

Here's to a possible new TA!!

You can say you heard it from me first when it happens!

Re: A new Firebird, much closer to a REALITY!!!

personally, i think pontiac were idiots with the GTO, it looked like a grand prix or a grand am, they made it look just like every other car they make, as far as i'm concerned, the flop of the GTO was due to the stupidest design idea i've ever seen in my life, so i hope they make a new Trans Am, but if they make it look like a retro 84 phoenix and ruin a new model Trans Am like they did with the GTO, i'll have to hunt them down one by one...

Re: A new Firebird, much closer to a REALITY!!!

Don't get me wrong... I'd love to see a 5th gen Camaro/Firebird(though if the name is resurected it likely will not be an F body platform). I'm just not into all the maybe/maybe nots of it all. If they're gonna build it they need to just go ahead a spill it.... if they wait to long there will be a BUNCH of '08-'09 Cobra's running around.....

If you follow the "insider" info, Scott Settlemire has asked us to "be patient, and keep the faith".... how's that for a carrot?
