Re: joining a team?

generally you have to become a tech for a lower level racing team, the best place to start if you live in the US is to volunteer for a SCCA Club Racing team in an open wheel class like Formula Atlantic or D or C Sports Racer. If you're a good crew member you'll probably be invited to work on a professional crew like Star Mazda or Toyota Atlantic. Then you might be able to move up to ChampCar, IRL, or GP2. Then if you're excellent in every facet of what you do, you might get invited to work with a Formula 1 team. Remember, at each level you must be better than your peers.

Re: joining a team?

you pretty much have to be the best tech out there to work for formula one. they have hundreds of people per team to choose from. Also if you screw up you're very expendible, if you aren't as good as even one other person, you might have to wait an extra few months or years to get a job. If this is your dream go for it, I know i'd love to do it but i know im not the absolute best man with a wrench, but don't be crushed if you don't get in, it's really hard.

Re: joining a team?

I've got a BS in mathematics, worked in the suspension industry for about 10 years, crew chiefed for a Grand-Am Cup team and several other SCCA club racing cars, and have nowhere near enough education or experience to work for an F1 team.

on a slightly related note; does anyone know if the F1 jobs are applied for or invited?

Re: joining a team?

Both. Actually, if you browse through teams' websites, you're likely to see job offers.

For example, http://www.bmw-sauber-f1.com/en/index.html Click "careers" at the bottom of the page.
