are g20's made to last?

I'm looking at buying my first g20, it's actually my first car and I'm in love with the g20. Which one of us isn't. The car is a 1996 with nearly 165k miles on it. Extremely high mileage for that year. The owner is selling it to me for 2000 dollars he says that it needs some minor tranny work but thats it. The guy is a friend of mine so I know he wont try and stick me but I'm curious as to how much life is actually left in the car, and how can I increase the life that is left, thanx for any suggestions and comments.

With that kind if mileage and and tranny trouble, I would try to get my friend to sell it for less, say around $1,500 and drop another engine in it and you would also be able to get a trans for less than it would cost to do major repairs. Unfortunately Infiniti's have a very low resale value, If he had to see what he would get on a trade in, he would know that $1,500 is a generous offer. You can get a used or rebuilt engine for anywhere from $600 to $1,200 depending on the mileage or its an import J-SPEC engine. Transmissions Iv'e seen for as little as $200 dollars. How long the SR20DE's last ultimately depends on how the engine has been kept, particularly above 50,000 miles. But this engine has a great reputation look how long it's been around (1991), and all of it's nowaday 4 cylinder cousins that have been built on a similar platform. If you get it, tune it up and use MOBIL1 synthetic, most people swear by it including myself. My car I bought with 36,000 miles in 98, It now has 116,000 miles on it and I'm currently servicing the EGR system, having the axle replace and the fuel pump. Enjoy! G20's are fun cars.

MINOR tranny work? Usually means a MAJOR repair. Even though $2000 may be a bargain for a 1996 165k G20, I would really try to get some specifics on what exactly needs repairs or replacements. Even though he's your friend he might not know everything that needs to be fixed. As for the longevity, that really depends on well maintained he's kept it and how well maintained you keep it.

Conversely I've never had one check engine light.

Why don't you get it thoughorly checked out by a mechanic looking for problems first? They could probably give you an idea of what repairs will be necessary in the near future.
