94 LeSabre- starts, shuts off right away

Does anyone know why? The engine starts for a split second, then shuts off right away.

This would happen sometimes over the past month, but now it's every time. The engine otherwise had been running good. Each time I try to start it, it does the same thing. It starts for a half second, then shuts off. Anyone know why?

First, welcome to Auto Forums.

Second...how long have you owned this car? Have you had any repairs done reciently? How many miles?

Regards

Dan

I would check all the vacuum lines for leaks first.

I've only owned it 2 months. I had 2 new front tires put on and a muffler when I bought it. It's otherwise in very nice condition. 95K. Jim

Did you see HotZ's post above yours talking about vacuum leaks?

FYI- The car is finally fixed. The Key security system wasn't working. Had to replace the key cylinder, expensive ignition key and a circuit board.

My usual good repair shop declined
The second shop changed the board (behind glovebox I think) $180
That failed - Replacing key cylendar + special keys about $250

Definitly a waste of money - I really wish it was just bypasssed.I didn't need it - except that they said bypass was not posssible.

Re: 94 LeSabre- starts, shuts off right away

A faulty ignition switch (VATS wire problem) would not cause the car to stall. It would only prevent the car from being started, perhaps intermittently if the wire wasn't totally disconnected or broken. A faulty VATS module however could cause the car to stall once the engine is running. The module sends a Pulse Width Modulated signal to the PCM. If this signal is not present, the PCM will not provide injector pulses thus causing the engine to stall.

To bypass the system and take the Key out of the picture, a correct resistor needs to be placed inline with the wires....the car will start and run every time...(this is what is done when a remote starter is used so the car can start without the key)

People have bypassed their own on these boards regularly! That's a shop you want to bypass in the future-obviously their knowledge level is low on the Buick you have.
