starter motor problem

hi all
please help me, i recently purchased a 1971 mbggt in need of restoration,
i have had to put a few parts on to get it running before i start on the strip down & rebuild.
could somebody help me with the wiring of a pre engaged starter motor? do all the thick wires go to the lowest bolt on the solonoid (as per the haynes manual) with the thin one on the terminal on the side? or are some of them fitted to the bolt just above? i have no power to any of the ancilleries from the ignition switch. ( fuel pump, lights, heater, windscreen wipers ect) & am a little unsure if i do a bit of trial & error i will damage the new starter motor i have just bought.
best regards

Re: starter motor problem

advancewiring.com has wiring diagrams to show what wires are connected together at the starter.

Re: starter motor problem

Steve, Early pre-engaged starters have the battery cable and brown wires with eyelet terminals attached to the bottom solenoid post. The cars I have worked on have a 3/8" spade on the bottom post, a thick brown wire is attached to the big spade. Some starters have two small terminals, one is 1/4" and should have a white/brown wire from the start relay, your 71 should have a start relay. There is a smaller terminal on most early starters, it's not used. If you have a later starter the posts will be side by side. If you have one of those just look for a heavy copper strap going into the solenoid, the cable and eyed wires and spade go on the post opposite the post with the copper strap. The later starters do not have the small terminal, they do have a 1/4" terminal for the white/brown wire from the start relay.

Let us know what problems you have, if any, after getting the starter wired correctly. On a Lucas electrical system, brown wires have no fuses and don't go through switches, they always have 12 volts on them if the battery is connected. White wires come from the ignition switch and are not fused, they have 12 volts when the ignition switch is on.
