Re: freegans in new york city

I can see their point. Anyone who's ever worked in a grocery store can attest to that. Using the bakery dept. where I worked as an example -- we would throw out food by the garbage bag -- and not those small kitchen bags. I would collect the trash at the Dunkin Donuts kiosk across from me, and at the end of the night they would be literally filling an entire carriage to overflowing with donuts that were simply the remainder of that day's stock.

I know this food is perfectly fine, because I would eat it myself -- and we used to have someone from a senior-center up the street come in once a week or so to collect bags of the throw aways (which only left 6 days of wasted food.)

BTW, a throwaway item in a supermarket bakery is often something who's shelf life ends the next day. Many of us will leave bakery items sitting for a week on our countertop at home and not think twice about it.

It's a tougher call when it comes to produce and whatnot. Oftentimes produce is fine, but what it gets thrown in with can be questionable at best. If I were to go for it though, I'd at least stick to produce with skins/shells (avocado, oranges, potatoes, melons, etc.) and bagged veggies (carrots, celery.) I would stay away from meats/seafood entirely (for obvious reasons.) Grocery should be fine having been bagged, freezedried, canned, recently frozen, vacuum packed, etc. -- although generally most grocery stuff that does end up being thrown away is literally expired and/or stale, since it'll usually be bought off the shelf before that date is ever eclipsed (if they've been rotating the product correctly.)

The biggest pain I can see with the whole thing is the dumpster diving aspect. It's one thing to dive into a dumpster behind an electronics/adult/bookstore -- it's another thing to dive into a dumpster behind a supermarket (or if you're really off your rocker, a restaurant.) Especially during the summertime -- yuck!

Thats the part that I wouldn't do. I knew about the excess waste that we have that is still good. Matter of fact when I was in junior high we were talking bout that and how we are a wastefull people. that was how many years ago like 12 i think. I'm sure we all know that but I didn't think someone would go through such lengths to prove this.

Re: freegans in new york city

On the stuff thrown out of the supermarkets thats where this food pantrey I've helped out at gets just about all of it's produce, dairy, and bakery items when things are expired every week someone who works for the patery will make round to places picking up food some of the produce you might not want to eat but they pick through it and throw out the bad stuff and give away the rest once a week. Most of it's still good food just a little past the sell by date.

Re: freegans in new york city

I may rummage in the dumpster for a little social engineering or for free magazines or something but I won't eat something that's been in the dumpster, moreless the ground.
