97 GMC Sierra will olny start when primed with gas

1997 Gms Sierra wont start unless it si primed. I primed it with starting fluid, starts and runs turn it off and try to restart it just cranks

Are there any trouble codes, are there any blown fuses? Check the fuel pressure, fuel pressure regulator is probably bad.

Get a fuel pressure gage on it, if this is CPFI, you need 65 psi to trigger the injectors for start.

It's very common to have the fuel pump fail. I lost three in two years from letting it go close to empty too often.
A pressure gauge is necessary in the tool box.
You can use a jumper with 12volts to the little red pigtail just under the power brake unit and the pump should run if it isn't frozen as my last one was. This will let you measure pressure if it does run.
