How hard is it to replace set recliner mechanism

My wife came in testerday holding the handle to her seat recliner on her 2000 Jimmy. At first I thought it had just come loose but now I relize the shaft actually snapped off. Just wanting to know the steps needed to replace it.

Thanks in Advance

This is a common problem. GM used screws that were too big when installing the handles. The oversized scew weakens the shaft. Most the time, you don't need to replace the whole thing. AutoZone sells replacement handles that will work even if the shaft is broke. They cost about $8 for the pair. Look for them in the "Help!" section.

Will these more or less bolt right on? The same thing was broken on mine when I bought it, I assumed you had to remove the whole internal mechanism because it looks like some of the "metal" (I use quotes because it looks like weak die-cast cheapo stuff) on the thing itself broke off with the handle in tact.

Re: How hard is it to replace set recliner mechanism

Thanks Blazee

Stopped by Autozone last night picked one up cost was 24 bucks for one. I did not have time to put it on last night. It appears to slip over the existing shaft. and tighten down with a set screw.

They must have recently started carrying those. I've seen them before, they were only available to order from a few places online. Those are much better than the ones that are $8/pair. The ones that are $8/pair don't have the set screw, if the shaft is broken in the wrong spot, they won't work. The ones like you bought will work in more situations.
