Question Temp is very high in 94 cutlass

I think there is a problem with my 94 cutlass supreme.. When i start my car up the temp is around 100 but then after driving about 5 minutes it goes up to 200.. and it usually stays at 200. But today it was at 200 and i was in the country without giving any gas..(so basically i was coasting) i was doing this for about 2 minutes and then i did it again and my temp goes a little higher and then my ccheck gauges light came on and thats when i realized my temp was so high, and i realized it was from just coasting because when i go about 60 it never goes up..(not yet anyway..) why would the temp go so high if i was just coasting ? after i coasted and saw the light so started speeding up and the temp went back down to 200 and the light went off (i was like wth?)
Would anyone know what the problem is?
Also, isn't 200 a bit high for when im driving casually also?

Re: Temp is very high in 94 cutlass

There could be several issues here, a thermostat that is going bad, fans that are not working, missing air deflector under the front end or what I think your problem is, is a bad water pump. The key here is the fact that when you speeded up the engine RPM goes up and the water pump turns faster moving more coolant. I would have this checked. Also since got hot make sure to watch for signs of leaks in the head gaskets!
