New to Hondas Need Cyl head help.

Hi everyone, I need help with my '84 Civic Wagovan. I got the car from a friennd that had the timing belt break on him while driving. I bought it really cheap with the intentions of having the head worked. This is still a viable option, but I was wondering if there was any other head that would work on this block. I found one for an '84 Accord 1.8, also really cheap, and in good shape, but will it fit. I am having a hard time finding a Civic head. Any help would be greatly appreciated, like I said I am new to Hondas. Thanks in advance.

Re: New to Hondas Need Cyl head help.

You NEED an '84-'87 Civic head. No other head will be a direct bolt on.

If your cylinder head is not cracked, most any machine shop should be able to rebuild it. You can also get a rebuilt head from most any auto parts store.

Personally, I'd rather have a rebuilt head than an unknown used head. After all the work of swapping the head, it would be a shame to find out that it's warped, has bad valve guides, or bent valves. Then you'll be right back to where you are now.

Thanks, I had a feeling that would be the case. Someone told me that the Honda heads wouldn't hold oil(?) if you had a valve job done. Something to do with the guides? Any thoughts on that? I have never heard that untill today.

Re: New to Hondas Need Cyl head help.

I've never heard this before, but I guess it would depend on the quality of the rebuild.

When I put my rebuilt cylinder head back together, I used genuine Honda valve stem seals and haven't had any problems.

BTW, you shouldn't have to do anything other than bolt the finished head back on, the only reason I put my head back together is because I'm a very "hands on" type of person.
