wacky fuel gauge

My fuel guage just started to act up. When It is in park the guage moves back and forth. When I put it in drive it indicates more fuel than is in the truck. Finally when it I drive down the road it eventually rests in the right spot. What is going on?

wacky sending unit in tank mine did same 200 should fix it .good luck

I agree. When mine did the same thing I had to drop tank. it not a real big job. but as thing go i changed the pump and sending unit. i didnt want to drop that tank again when it was cold outside. pump and sending unit from NAPA around 300 and change.

My 99 Z71 had the same problem as well as being tricky to start. My dealer dropped the tank and replaced the fuel pump and it solved both problems. It cost me $750.00.

I'ver heard that the fuel in the tank actually helps cool the pump and after running on low tanks eventually burns out the pump.

You can get just the sending unit from the dealer and all you need is the insurance slip.The dealer needs the vin to get it.Stay awy from Napa fuel pumps,made by Airtex.Airtex makes piece of junk fuel pumps.Carquest used to get fuel pumps from Airtex,dropped them and went to a differant supplier.

what about carter fuel pumps? They any good?

Carter pumps are the best ones.My father only had 2 go bad so far.

2 ? Is that 2 per truck or what. I got a 99 burb with 114000 mile on it. I got a way to get a carter pump for $200. Was thinking of getting it just to have on hand. Ideas????

Napa pumps are made by Carter, have been for about 5 years, Carquest pumps are made by airtex, have been for about 4 years.
