2000, Mazda 626, 5 speed, 150,000 miles: Hi. The outside temps have dropped significantly in the last two weeks…just when I started having a high idle problem. When I start the car and go, it’s fine until have to put it in neutral. It normally idles at about 1000 rpm, but now it’s idles at 2500-3000. At times, the check engine light comes on, but always goes off as soon at I put it into gear. Once the car warms up, the problem goes away, and it seems to be fine on the highway too.
Should I let the car warm up some more before beginning to drive it?? Or is it something that I should have checked out ASAP? Anyone else have this problem in the cold temps? Any input is appreciated! |

This sounds like a sensor going bad due to the temp. I would have it checked when you get a chance, I do not think that it needs to go right way. But do not push it off to long.

Re: high idle
Thanks for your input! This morning I let it warm up about 10 mins before driving...it's hard to listen to it revving and jumping all around, but once it finishes it's fit, the car runs fine.

Re: high idle
ive seen a couple of clutch pedal position switches go bad and cause a very high idle. though its hard to say without looking at the car with my own eyes.
