Annoying Problem
My car is a 2000 GT automatic and I have a problem with it making a very loud humming type of noise and a slight vibration. I pretty much dont hear the noise until I hit about 55km/h, it is the most intense from 65km/h to about 85km/h after which it gets quieter and loses the vibration. When I jacked up the front end and got the wheels up to speed it does not make the noise. The noise sounds like it is coming from up front on the drivers side and I got the opinions of some people of what they thought the problem could be and they almost all said wheel bearing. I replaced the bearing and there is no change in the noise. So I did some more asking around and tried various things out to see if I could diagnose what the problem is with little luck. The other things that I have noticed about it is that whenever
I turn the whel to the right the noise goes away, I put it straight again and it comes back and when I turn left it is still there. Also when under heavy acceleration the vibration goes away and it is not so noisy. What are the chances that this is a transmission problem??? I was told that this could mean that I have a bad bearing in the transmission, but I am hoping that this is not the problem because I understand that could be very expensive to repair. Any opinions are appreciated. |

Re: Annoying Problem
There are a couple of possibilities here one being the wheel bearing, but since you replaced that I would discount it for now. Although you may need to change the bearing on the opposite side. As for the transmission if it were in the transmission you should hear the noise all the time not just under acceleration. My guess would be an axle shaft that is starting to go bad. One of the CV joints may be starting to go. The key here is the vibration especially since you don't have any during hard acceleration and the fact that it goes away. I would check the CV joints on both sides to see if there is any movement. Generally what you state is caused by the joint next to the transmission not the one at the wheel but anything is possible.

Re: Annoying Problem
Thanks for the response GTP Dad I got it fixed now. It was the passenger side wheel bearing.
