Warning Light help

Can anyone tell me what the red warning light is/means that is located below the 'low tire pressure' and 'change oil' light on a 2000 Alero?

My wife called me from out of town saying that this light keeps coming on in her dash but she isn't very clear as to what it says. All she said is that the light is red and it says the word shift and that it is below the warning lights I mentioned above?

Any help is good help at this point. Thanks

Re: Warning Light help

The shift light is orange and it only works if you have the 4 cylinder with the stick shift. I think the light you're talking about is the one letting you know the coolant is low. If it has a little bottle with an arrow pointing down, then that's what it is. Check and make sure the coolant level is where it needs to be. If not, refill it and keep an eye on it. If it runs low again, you probably have the infamous intake manifold gasket leak that plagues the 3.4 liter V6 engines. Make sure you don't just keep refilling the coolant if the problem persists. Get the gasket fixed because a coolant leak into the engine can cause it to hydrolock.
