4wd works, sometimes
My 99 JGCL has quadratracII and it only works sometimes. It makes a howling vibration up front when I slow down and it makes an awful clunking and grinding when I put it in 4lo. It has a V8 in it. Any ideas?

Re: 4wd works, sometimes
My first guess would be to check the fluid in the transfer case. If its low just drain it all out and go buy some gear oil, like 80/90 or something, and fill it back up. My '96 has select trac, and when i put it in 4 it works fine, but taking it out i usually have to stop, go in reverse, then it pops out. But my transfer case is just bad.

Re: 4wd works, sometimes
if you have the quadtra trac 2 (nv247) the recomended fluid is
Mopar P/N 05016796AA (4 pints) about the grinding noise, how exactly are you shifting into 4lo? Does it make the clunk when you are at a complete stop (with the jeep in neutral of course) and shift into 4lo? the howling noise, is it coming from the xfer case or the front diff? |

Re: 4wd works, sometimes
I do have the 247.
When shifting into lo, I stop, put the transmission into neutral, then shift. It usually grinds like shifting without a clutch and it feels like it's not engaging sometimes. Other times it feels like it's dropping right in but in either case, it still clunks loudly. When it goes in, it clunks usually when you let off or put on the gas. It is a loud clunk that almost sounds like the tc is loose or something, but it's not because it doesn't make the noise in 4hi. The howl sounds and feels like it comes from up front somewhere. I keep thinking it's the diff or maybe the cv in the driveshaft(it has the type 3). Thanks for your help! |

Re: 4wd works, sometimes
http://www.wjjeeps.com/tsb_list.htm#DIFFERENTIAL
There is a TSB on this that might apply to your Jeep. 030399 - NOISY FRONT PROPELLER SHAFT Date: 05/28/99 Model year(s): 1999 Description: Noisy front propeller shaft rear constant velocity joint. Details: Applies to models built prior to March 14, 1999. While driving, a noise may be noticed coming from the front propeller shaft. The noise may sound like popping, snapping and/or grinding. A driveline vibration may also be noticed. Closer inspection of the front propeller shaft may reveal a loss of lubricant from the rear constant velocity (CV) joint. The loss of lubricant may be due to a torn CV joint boot. The condition may be the result of an interface fit between the back of the rear CV joint and the end of the transfer case front output shaft. This interface fit may cause the vent hole on the back of the rear CV joint to become blocked (sealed over). If the vent on the joint becomes blocked, it may cause pressure to build within the joint which may result in damage to boot of the rear CV joint. Parts required: 52099497AC Propeller shaft, front 4.0L 52099498AC Propeller shaft, front 4.7L ----- there is also one that applies to your transfer case 210999 - NV 247 TRANSFER CASE SHUDDER but it doesn't sound like the problem you're having. i'm not too sure on that, but i'd recommend atleast doing a fluid change and see if it solves the problem. Otherwise i'm not too fimiluar with the 247 xfer case. |

Re: 4wd works, sometimes
So it's possible that the front driveshaft's cv can be causing the 4wd to not work consistantly? And I will definitely change out the fluid in my tc.
Thanks so much for your input. |

Re: 4wd works, sometimes
i wouldn't go as far to say that.
I was going into detail about the whining noise from the front that you were talking about in the prior post
