Unhappy headlight troubles

Hello everyone,

A couple days ago I went to warm up my 2000 chevy cavalier.
While driving down the road I noticed my service light was on. It wasnt
check engine, so I didnt worry about it until I got home. During the course of the day I noticed that each time I started the car, the drl indicator (headlamp on dash) would flash 5 or six times and I could hear the drl relay as well. During the course of the day, I realized that my daytime running lights where not working. (obvious huh)

I dont like that feature anyway, but it bothers me that the service light continues to glow during operation. Anyway I disabled the drl's by cutting the blue wire leading into the BCM and then just grounding it under the dash. Works great, and service light is off, but my right headlight is dimmer then the the left. That problem was there when this this whole thing started, even before I modifyed the BCM. So everything is working ok except when I use the hi or low beams, the right is still significantly dimmer. So it seems like a ground problem somewhere. Just wondering if any 1 had the same problem and was able to fix it. Thanks for any help, Don...)

Re: headlight troubles

according to the diagram both the left and the right headlight are grounded through the head light switch. they do not have independent grounds. i would check the wires before they come together at the left headlamp. i would also make sure the right is getting a full 12V at the fuse and at the headlight itself. the dark blue wire you grounded is actually the low beam input and the DRLs run through the left headlight in a series circuit with the right headlight. theyre powered on the right headlight and go thru the left to ground. the drl relay feeds the left headlight power at all times except when the DRLs are commanded on so the relay cant just be removed. you could take it out and jump the 87 and 30 terminals and your DRLs will not work. the other two contacts should probably be jumped too, maybe even have a small resistor in there. see if that works better than the grounded blue wire.

Re: headlight troubles

Very good information !! I will put it to use as soon as I get some decent weather. I suppose I should undo what I did to disable the drl's, and focus on what caused this problem first. Thanks again for every 1's help

Re: headlight troubles

I have the same problem with my 97 Z24. The right headlight is dim. I also keep blowing fuses (headlights, talilights, dashlights) Who ever put my fog lamps in screwed everything up. I took out the fog lamp fuse and replaced all the other and now my head lights are fine..... for now.
