ignition noise - '90 Cierra

Hello -

I have a 1990 Cierra with the factory AM/FM radio and four speakers. The radio works well enough, but like many factory radios the AM section is subject to noise, and in my case, lots of ignition noise.

Strange problem: if I'm listening to AM, the "buzzing" ignition noise will start up and get a little louder...if I let up on the accelerator, the buzzing goes away, then comes back within a few seconds of my pressing the gas pedal again. I would think this type of noise would be pretty constant, regardless of whether the speed is increasing. It doesn't sound like an alternator "whine."

In any case, can you recommend things I can try to minimize the noise; any chance I have non-resistor plugs or bad ignition wires (I just got the car from my aunt, so I don't have much of it's history)? I don't listen to AM much, but I'm sure the noise would feed into FM and into an aftermarket unit as well.

Thanks for any aid.

Re: ignition noise - '90 Cierra

Welcome to AF! If you haven't changed the plugs and ignition wires lately change them. Make sure the grounds on your car are tight and the issue should go away and you should see some better performance.

The plug wires are probably going bad gradually and causing the issue. Just make sure you use resistor plugs too!

sometimes a bad antenna ground can cause a noisy radio.
