Supercharger?

What is the easiest way to supercharger a 3.8L v6 bird? I just picked up a 98 firebird and wanted to know the easiest way to supercharge my firebird.

I'm no expert on superchargers but I do know they are not cheap or easy. I found someone who asked a similair question on camaroz28 and this was the response:

It'll cost you a lot of money to get this thing going. I would consider just doing the basic bolt-ons (intake, exhaust) and then a 50-75 shot of N20 on top of that. Good luck with whatever you decide to do and grats on the ride.

Re: Supercharger?

And....

Do not fall for the cheap things on EGAy.
If it isn't at least $3500...it isn't a real supercharger.

Re: Supercharger?

Why not go Turbo? Look at the GNs/etc...they're all 3.8+turbo.

If you want a supercharger, I'd look at vortech/prochargers site to see what they offer and if you don't find one there, call them and ask. Worst case they can say is we don't offer one. I had a P1SC on my 98 LS1 and it was great..I'm sure you could use a P1SC with a 4.1" pulley(3# for me..probably around 5-6 for you) and go from there. Just FYI

Re: Supercharger?

Do you know if you can put a gm supercharger on a firebird or do you have to go aftermarket? Also, do you know a good site to find turbos for firebirds? Thanks

Re: Supercharger?

There are things to be considered with supercharging. The first would be the compression ratio of a stock 3.8. If you spend near 4,000 dollars on a super charger and can only run a few pounds of boost, you may as well have bought a used lt1, paid someone to drop it in, and you'll have way better benefits, with way more power than even a well boosted 3.8(providing the 3.8 has no other mods) as far as nitrous, plesae please consult a professional and see what the stock 3.8 can handle without causing a problem, it's for the sake of driving it after you put a shot to it. But no matter what you do, good luck and keep us posted!

Don't bother with a GM blower. Its a different setup on the GTP's etc from my understanding and you would have to put the new heads/etc on.

As far as compression ratio...its not any higher then an LS1 and if you were around earlier this year, you would have known I ran 8# on stock compression using the twin intercoolers that came in the kit by ATI.

LT1 would be a good option, but remember. You need new everything. Computer, wiring harness, front shocks and possible springs, and then any other supporting parts with the possibility of a new tranny. The 5 speed v6 tranny isn't going to hold with the LT1s power. Alot more to it then just throwing the engine in.

Nitrous, yes, he could do that. I would go wet shot with a window switch and Wide Open Throttle(WOT) switch.

Problem with the V6's in the fbodies is that when it comes to increasing power, its not really worth doing just bolt ons unless you do something major(turbo/blower/nitrous). In all seriousness, no matter what the young man does/decides to do, he needs to read and research what would be the best thing to achieve his power wants/needs and his spending $$$. That's just my

Re: Supercharger?

depends on how big it is and if you get a turbo or supercharger, and how much boost or psi you run.

depends on the following.

1. size of the blower/turbo
2. intercooled or not
3. alky(or methane)/water injection
4. type of fuel used
5. timing in the programming(read: tune)
6. type of fuel system setup you run.
7. how many pounds of boost you're going to run

All of that goes into account. also, depends on your engine.

man,

l got 97 formula LT1.

just a regular supercharger.. (not intercooled)

cant l just use supercharger?

do l have to have boost?

l always wondered, how much hp would l gain if l would have super/turbocharger.

Re: Supercharger?

Would you have to do anything other than bolt on a supercharger if you want to put one on a LS1. would any of the internals need to be changed as well?
