My transmission will last a long time

A mechanic told me that my manual tranny was dry and had no gear oil. He put oil in and it sounds better already.

I am sorry and embarassed to have bothered you all with so many 'advanced' questions before covering the most basic questions, "Does your tranny have the proper fluid in it? Does it have any fluid in it?"

[In my defense, i'll say that my car was recently "totaled" in an accident and also losing lots of oil. Between finding a bumper in the junkyard and trying to recoup losses through a lawsuit scheduled maintenance took a back seat]

Re: My transmission will last a long time

that doesnt mean that your transmission will last a long time,
if anything your transmission has already went through some major non-oil movement & has gotten weared up~~~~doesnt that all sound right?
lol,
I believe the tranny oil is like :

5w 30/20 for real cold weather(30 & below)--not recommended

& 20w 40/50 for normal-(hot) weather(20 & up)--not recommended unless you live somewhere it doesnt reach below 20%

or what is usally in any tranny & everyone should probably be using is 10w 40
(for weather of below 0%,to over 100%)--all year weather,

correct me if im wroung.

Re: My transmission will last a long time

strange... first time i checked/changed my tranny oil, it still had the proper amount of fluid... granted it was 15 years old and the wrong shade of ... well it was totally black. sortof. anyway i changed it year before last and last year. i learned that you don't need to change tranny oil very often. the oil i pulled out of it last year was clear and clean as could be. if it weren't for the dirty pan i was catching it in, i could've re-used it.

lol,
1990civic,
Yes, you are correct. But when i said a long time I said it in I meant that it was going to make it to Friday. A few days ago it really sounded like I was going to need to junk my car. I'm certainly not happy to discover that i've been running the thing dry. I want to kick myself. But on the other hand I'm very happy to spend 15 dollars on gear oil instead of 550 dollars on the installation of a used tran that might be much worse than the tran i have now. (MY 4g4d would not be the best 4g4d to invest $ in to)

I did some reading about trans. I read about a guy who pulled apart his 4g trans (BOBISTHEOILGUY forums). His symptoms extremely close to mine. I believe that i have worn bearings and that noisey bearings can last a long time. As opposed to "slipping gears" or "grinding gears" which are NOT likely to function as long.

Re: My transmission will last a long time

Skotman,
I'm not sure why my trans oil went low. Maybe i sprung a leak. I've got a couple theories as to what caused it to start whining. (previous owner putting the wrong fluid in it? previous owner put in a used trans that has twice as many miles as the car?)

I just have to watch it closely.

Re: My transmission will last a long time

where is it coming from? axle seals? grab the axles where they go in the trans, if there is a lot of play the differential is shot. I've seen this happen a few times.
