94 suburban brake light failure

the brake lights on my suburban have gone out. i replaced all the bulbs checked all the fuses. all the wiring apears to be in good shape no loose connections around the harness. all the other lights work in any combination the only exception is the reverse lights, sometimes you have to put it in neutral then back to reverse for the lights to luminate, but still no brake lights. is there a relay that both share or is there something on the transmission for the brake lights.

Welcome to af on your first post
Find the wires going into and out of turn signal switch.
You may have to pulll the lower dash panel.
Check for brake light go into the switch and brake light comming out.
Have you checked the wiring at the rear of frame?
are rear turn signals working?
Any trailer plug wiring on it.
Is the 4 way button pushed in or is the 4 way working good

ADAM26: As MT says, "welcome", there are a lot of us here to try and help you. In order to do that we will ask ?'s. First of all there is no correlation with the brake lights and backup lights other than they are both in the same housing. So, ?'s. Do the rear turn signals work? Does the 3rd stop light work? When you activate the "hazard" switch, do the rear lights work? Answer these and we'll go from there.........Steve

Re: 94 suburban brake light failure

ADAM26: If the truck has trailer wiring, check it near the trailer hitch, the trailer wiring plug can corrode, or based on past experience, the wire insulation from the trailer wiring wore thru and was shorting on the hitch frame. That wiring bounces and chafes over time. Its worth a look. Good luck.

Re: 94 suburban brake light failure

ADAM26: If none of the above works, try checking the brake light switch. I have replaced them on both of my trucks. Its located under the dash, near the top of the brake pedal "arm". If your truck has higher milage on it, it would be worth a look. Once again, good luck.

Post for adam26 from a newby

New here, but not to mechanics. There is a recall from GM on the brake light switch and wiring. May be a free fix for you. Just give them the VIN # and see.

The conector plates on these will alos go bad. Can find them online or at most part stores.
