I need help w/ my fuel pressure regulator

I have a 1978 530i BMW, I just put another motor in it. I had to get a fuel pump because some one stole it off mine while it was setting. Let me start with that I'm not 100% sure I have it on correct. I got a used pump from a junk yard off a 1986 325 (maybe this could be my problem?) not seeing the one that was in the car I had to guess how this one went on, I hooked the line coming out of the tank to the biggest port on the pump and I hooked the line going to the motor to the small end where the wires are at. I have good pressure at the end of the line at the motor, BUT when I hook it up the regulator and I hook the vacuum up to the regulator nothing comes out the out ports of the regulator. ( it is a new regulator). any ideas would be great I have been working on this thing for days and can not figure it out
