1988 chevy cap. v8 305 4bbl blah blah

alright well my cars got alot of problems and this one is the biggest becuase it eats up so much of my gas without even going nohwere.whenever i start my car up to go to school or something, it doesnt start because the choke valve flap stays shut.so i have to pump it, then hold down on the gas pedal until it starts and very seldomly i have to get out and open it up manually.evrytime this happens it takes about half a quarter of my gas.i have sprayed several cans of carb. cleaner inside and in every little nook and cranny but it still stays shut sometimes.

also, how would i check if im missing teeth on my flywheel?because it often makes a very loud screetching,"ERRRR"-type noise so i have to bump the ignition start once and then it starts.

#1, get a voltmeter and check for power at the choke whenever the ignition is in Run, Bulb Test or Start. The wire is connected to the choke, isn't it?

#2, you don't have flat spots or stripped gear teeth on the flywheel (not likely, anyway). What you WILL need to do is obtain some starter shims (a few dollars at Autozone etc) and place these between the block and starter.

well,thank u for the thoughts and im thinkin it is da linkage to the choke.and today i tried startin it and al it did was a LOUD ASS noise like it usually does so i looked under and saw about 4 or 5 cracks from the starter to the flywheel cover.now iono what to do.get a new starterl,then what?

and also that starter was replaced in October last year and it was a remanufactured starter and shims were not installed when it was put on.

Did you try ether (starting fluid) down the carb? Just curious, that will blow the starter housing off the motor sometimes, as the ether can kick the engine to rotate backwards. Also make sure that you get the right starter for the car, there are subtle differences in some blocks from year to year.

Have your flywheel looked at closely, chewed up teeth will eat up a starter drive quickly. A few gnarly teeth on the flywheel can be filed down easily, any more and you should replace the flywheel.

Check your electric choke module out as someone suggested, I replaced mine on my 84 and it made a huge difference.

no ive never put startin fluid down the carb. im replacin my starter today and im buyin shims for it and while im at it im gonna look at the flywheel and check for bad teeth on it.
