Need to be 18 4 Lisence?

Hey, I heard that there is going to be a new law in California. That you have to be 18 before you can get a driver's license? Is this true?

Well since I'm all clear now and can look down at people, go for it.

After the Supreme Court ruled that anybody under 18 can't get the death penatly for murder, maybe they shouldn't be able to drive. (that was a huge argument for and against when that ruling came out so that's why I brought it up)

There are a lot of other countries that don't allow you to get a licence until you're 18.

As it stands, from my experience with most American under 18's, most of them aren't mature or responsible enough that they should be allowed behind the wheel of a car at 16.

Hell...won't matter for me in a month anyways, but I have to agree with Ray. The only person under 18 who I trust to drive me somewhere in a car is myself...I (but who doesn't) like to consider myself a very good driver, at least much more so then a lot of my friends who just take the privelage to drive for granted and have no understaning of how to drive in the way that they need to in order to deal with modern traffic...most of my friends have no real respect for how much power they actually have while driving and do stupid things all the time, the main reason why I insist on driving, even if it means paying for a little more gas.

Sad thing is most arent even mature enough at 18. But I'm not sure age has a much to do with this as does how we go about teaching kids to drive. The first thing that has to go is allowing parents to teach their own kids, or put restrictions on it. Because we can all agree as many idiots drive on the rode we don't want the vast majority teaching their kids.

Plus make everything HARDER and more difficult. I mean I remember how much of a blow off Drivers Ed was. I never read crap and hardly paid attention and still passed with flying colors.

It won't solve anything. Bring the driving age back down to 12. If Floyd Clymer could drive a Maxwell at age ten, a three year old could operate any modern day car.

Not true. CA is just beefing up the existing graduated provisional licensing system to cut down on teen injuries and deaths. See links below:

I've gotta agree with Texas on this one, it is not merely a matter of age so much as it is a matter of the persons actual abilities as a driver.

In California, at least in my experiences, the DMV in car test does not really subject the driver to real life situations. Also, a large amount of time you will see people passing for no reason other than that the tester liked them.

I am not sure how the laws are in other states but when I turned 16 in Georgia you couldnt (or you werent supposed to) drive after midnight. I think if the driving age is to stay the same they should toughen up on laws like that. Maybe drop the curfew time down till when it turns dark, youngins should be home when the street lights come on anyway. And officers should actually enforce laws like that. I dont know how many times I went through roadblocks at 2am when I was 16 and the cop didnt say a thing to me about driving after curfew. I am thinking maybe no interstate driving either, the only friends who died from car wrecks when they were under 18 died on the interstate.

Think about how easy defensive driving is...that is suppose to "teach" or "remind" you the traffic laws. They give you the answers for cripes sake. I was in a small town where I took it, so everyone in there minus i think 2 people were college age. Friends who have taken it here in houston said people still failed it after being given the answers. That's pathetic and how idiotic are driving system is.

defensive driving ! thats a joke that you pay. I think you should get your permit at 16 and keep it for two years, then if you pass the test, you drive.

Most states today have a law that if you quit or get kicked out of high school you cannt get your Lisence till your 18. Unless you spend hundreds of $$ and goto court to fight for your rights to drive to work and stuff. And thats no garintee you'll get your Lisence.
