Keypad on 2000 Grand Marquis

Does anybody know how to deactivate the keypad on a 00 Marquis? In the winter when its cold and it rains, the interior lights just keep cycling on and off unless you go out and dry off the keypad and press the buttons a couple of times. It only does it when the temp is below 45 or so, its fine in the summer. I never use it anyway, so I really don't see the point of replacing it (I'm sure its not cheap). I would rather just turn it off.

Just got my car back in December and we are just now hitting our really cold time of year here in East TN.... and guess what it seems I have the same situation going... thought I was going nuts there for a bit - but I am planning to pull the door pannel off later this week and just disconnect the keypad all together, because like you I don't use it... and it is 86.23 just for the part- I may later replace it once I see how hard it would be to do it, but for now I am just going to unplug it and leave it out of the loop cause waking up to a dead battery before work is no fun at all..

I will post how it works out for me and if this solves my problems.

I hope you were able to solve yours, if so what did you do?

Sorry Deacon, Its been warm and dry here so of course my keypad has been fine. I'm not sure if just unplugging it is an option. I am going to just break down and replace mine.

Re: Keypad on 2000 Grand Marquis

Got mine fixed. you can just unplud it, but even more we pulled the door panel off and got inside of the door there is just one clip that holds the keypad down on the right hand side, once you pop that you can just life the keypad out of the door... we carefully did this and you will see that you can further take the keypad apart...

We used a small optical screw driver and carefully pried it open over the little clips, once doing so lifted the top half off. the rubber buttons went with the top half. you will then see a small green circuit board running the length of the keypad. now make sure you have this unpluged while you do this.

in my case it looked as though a drop of water or something had gotten in there and made a connection between two of the connectors and started a corrosion. the water was long gone but as the corrosion had grown and it kept shorting and makeing random connections it had left a burnt looking place going between two connectors of one button. we carefully scraped this clean and took a q-tip with alchohol on it and cleaned the area completely. once this was done we put it all back together pluged the keypad back up and like magic the keypad worked again and no lights going on and off for no reason.

This took about 2 hours or so and would have gone a lot faster had we experience with removing the door panel of this particular vehicle. which by the way in a 2000 GM you have two screws in the pull handle, one visible locaion in the door near the latch, one kinda of hidden down at the bottom in the bottom edge of the carpeted section, and when you remove the control pad with all the window and door lock controls which just pops out, you will see another screw, remove those and then the whole panel lifts up, there are no clips to pop you do NOT want to pull this panel back towards you to try and pop loose, as it just lifts up with some effort once all screws have been removed, if you pull back you will break a clip and they are not replaceable on this design they are molded as part of the door panel.

i hope this helps please let me know if you have any questions.. this worked great for me and i didn't have to spend 86 bucks for a keypad it just cost me some of my own time.

we are still in our cold and rainy season so if it begins to act up again will post and let others know but for now everything is great.
