2000 Metro Tie Rod Ends?
I hope this is the right place as my metro is considered a chevy, but metro was not listed there.
My metro makes many loud popping clanking noises when I turn either to the right or left. At first it only did it if I was on a grade and turning. Now it does it if on level ground and I turn. A whole lot more and louder than before. I am concerned that I am going to do a front flip soon. Would this be tie rod ends? If so is it inner or outer or is there a way to tell? Any advice is greatly appreciated. Thanks. My second metro. 1st had 272,000 miles 2nd has 142,000 miles and running |

I don't think it is the tie rods. Sounds more like bad CV joints. When the CV joints start to go, they clunk when you turn, and only get worse. Will it all fall apart on you? Doubtful. A sure sign that it is CV and not tie rodsis to inspect the CV boots. Crank your wheel hard to the right and check the right CV boot. This is the rubber thing on the axle near the tire. If it is cracked, then dirt and other road shit will have got in, and in no time, it starts to cause the joints to seperate. This ussually happens in spring, cause the changing temperatures crack the rubber, and there is plenty of road grime ready to set up shop in your CV's. Check the left side by doing the same thing with the wheel cranked to the right.
Check the tie rods to make sure the bolts are still tight. Give them a bit of a shake, you'll know if they are loose. Replacing axles are relatively easy, but first make sure that's what it is, then come back here for instructions. |
