front control arm bushings

Are control arm bushings a common replacement item? One bushing has the rubber separated from the metal housing and the other is going. The dealer wanted 3.5 hours to change the two bushings (round pucks at the front of the control arm). Another mechanic said he can get them out in minutes with an air hammer without removing the control arm from the vehicle. Can they easily be changed or need to be done with special tools at the dealer?

I think the second mechanic is on the right track. Once you get the arm off it doesn't take long to get the bushings out. I really don't believe it takes any special tools to change them out.

Re: front control arm bushings

Does the dealer's charge also include a front end alignment?

My control arm bushings were the same way. Also had a bad right side ball joint. I just replaced both lower control arms which included both bushings and ball joint. Got them at the dealer....each control arm about $78 Ea. Installed in several hours, no special tools and didn't even require an alignment. ...Good Luck.....

It did certainly cause a popping sound, yes. Going up curbs, small pot holes...it was just annoying. Got to the point when passengers would ask what the knocking sound was.....I took several pictures of the bad joint if you care to see them. They are easy to check....jack it up, support the vehicle, slowly apply upward pressure to the lower control arm at the joint...if its loose, you'll see it. Mine was rusty and dry as a bone....good luck...
