Re: Completed: Porsche GT3 in groovy '70's paint scheme

Interesting. What kind of paper do I need to make my own decals on a regular printer? I know I'm a pain in the ass with that thing, but it's very useful. I have two termic printers (well, the one that is not laser) and maybe I'll haven't to buy that ALPS printer...

SEE YOU

Testors sells a couple of decal paper "kits", one for clear and one that prints on white. I'm pretty sure they have a system for inkjet decals, though I don't use inkjet.

I've used both plain decal paper and I've used a paper called "toner transfer paper" that's made for electronics guys to print laser toner on and transfer it w/heat to a custom metal circuit board (like photoetching). It works well w/laser printed graphics that are sealed w/decal sealer or Krylon Crystal Clear as a carrier. That's what I used.

Re: Completed: Porsche GT3 in groovy '70's paint scheme

I'll have to check those Testor's decal papers. Looking for a site that sells those things then...

Thank you very much for your help. SEE YOU

Thanks - That should give me a good starting point. This could be just the inspiration I need to actually build something again!

Thanks for all the comments!

Here are a couple of pics comparing the GT3 w/the Carrera RS I built in the '80's and just recently refurbished. Makes me really wish I'd painted the RS the correct color . French Blue is simply too dark! The color on the GT3 (TS 23 light blue) seems to be the best hobby match to Porsche's color. I also touched up the decals a bit, made the front one's leading edge better integrated w/the air intake.

Great build. This thing is blindingly shiney in person.

The GT3 is now hot on my to do list too.

The front decal looks much better now. The duo looks sharp together.

They both look great together Bob! I'd take the older one though. Keep up the great work!

hey if anybody is interrested.. don't know if it's in the FAQ.
but you can print your own color decals with a inktjet printer... just print it on regular paper with you're inktjet, go to a copycenter and ask if they would make a colour-copy of you're print onto the decal foil . Et voila.. coloured decals without buying a colour laserprinter

There is no metal version of this Tamiya kit. I'm not sure if they did one w/a plated body, some Tamiya kits were made w/chrome plated bodies (which aren't very good as they didn't remove mold lines and it makes painting difficult). The previous version of the GT3 was a standard 996 that they haven't made since they switched to the GT3.
