Will Sirius or XM work if my '01 head unit has version "50" software?

Thinking I was out of luck for the OEM solution on my 2001 non-nav X5, on a lark I checked my head unit to see what software version it's running. To my surpirse, it is software version 50, (43-00 50). Is software version "50" the key to OEM capability with Sirius or XM regarless of year, or does it have to be at least a 2002 build also?

For what's it worth, (and this may really show my ignorance) the MID display is fully capable of displaying song title and text, as witnessed when certain FM stations send out the artist and song title with their transmission. And I'm not the original owner of the car, so maybe the head unit or software was upgraded? Or maybe I'm just clinging to any thin hope for an OEM satellite solution.

Thanks

My guess would be that you would be able to install it on your 2001. I would take it to a dealer to be sure and see how much it'll cost you. I have Sirius built into my 4.4 with the nav. It is a 2003, so that does not help you much but it works great and was worth the money. And yes, the MID display scrolls the artist/title of all songs, just like select FM radio stations.

Question Another 2001 X5

I too have a 2001X5 3.0 and would like to install XM sat radio. I have Nav, DSP, and a BMW CD Changer installed. Do I have any hope of finding someone to integrate XM radio into the current setup? If not, what my next best option to get XM radio? Delphi XM Roady? Any help/insight would be appreciated. My dealer did not know. The independent BMW guy near my house said he woud look into it.

Thanks,
Scott

I ended up having the Terk Commander installed. It fits nicely in the ashtry (it can still close) and is hard wired into the system via the CD changer wires in the back. I can still control the sound through the steering wheel controls. It comes with a remote which clips to the visor so switching channels is a breeze. Skip Circuit City and Best Buy as they won't do an install other than the crappy FM modulation. You need to find a specialty audio shop that will hard wire it in using a Blitzsafe adaptor. My whole system was $425 installed.

Have you found any more info about adding XM or Sirius to your system? I have a 2005 and would love to do the same thing.
