GTO engine swap..worth it?

I've wanted a 3000gt VR4 since I was younger, and now that I'm 18, I grabbed a 10g loan, and bought a 94 for $5100 (169k miles). Im ordering twin 15g turbos, 550cc fuel injectors, bigger fuel pump, greddy boost controller, hks timer, hks BOV, and possibly some new cams. But while reviewing the parts, I asked myself this question. "Would I benifit from a GTO engine swap, or should I just rip everything from the block, and do a full rebuild? The tranny already was rebuilt, and new clutch already in there.

I have the funds available for the engine swap, and I would be doing this with my brothers boss (mechanic for 29 years)

BTW, incase anyone is wondering, I am doing everything without the help of my parents. My dad owes me 15G from 2 years, and I have been helping support my family since I was 14. This was something that I had to do.

Re: GTO engine swap..worth it?

I would say not worth it man. Im sure i will be corrected if im wrong, but to my knowledge theres not a whole lot of difference in the GTO engine. Maybe a little more aggresive cams, but i think thats it. And with the money you would be saving, you could get all sorts of good stuff like the turbos and injectors you listed. Its also not a bad idea to keep a little bank just in case.

Re: GTO engine swap..worth it?

You'd be saving some serious money by leaving the engine in there and buying more modifications. Hell, you might even be able to a whole turbo kit with the money that you would save

Good luck with your choice. Either way, I'm sure that your car will be great with the mods that you're looking at getting. Good luck with your family, too. I completely understand your perdicament, and sympathize very much. Only the best of luck to you guys.

I planned on all the mods, plus the engine swap. The only problem that I would have, is that iv'e never dealt with a j-spec motor, all Jap motors I have worked with, have been tuned for the US.

Im getting twin 15g bolt on with new wastegates for like $2400
The fuel injectors are from 3sx, running around $500, then probably a fuel injector from 3sx. So on and so forth.

GTO engine is the same as the USDM 3000gt engine. Only difference would be o2 housings which youd have to swap out anyway.

while your at it, you might as well do the 60K tune up, becuase you've got about another 10K miles till you have to, and I wouldn't wanna risk breaking anything before than... just my two cents, other than that though, good luck!

Why does everyone think the 6G72 is so weak? there is no need to rebuild at all! wtf? did everyone drive hondas with 1.6 sohc before they got thier 3ks of what?

Mitsubishi engineers built them to withstand nuclear hollocaust! I could grab a VR-4 with 150K miles, run it at redline all day long in the daytona speed way, take it home and drop a 100 wet-shot of nos and and up the PSI by 5lbs, add race fuel, go to morrosso and run the track 12 times in a row, drive 230 miles to tampa and jump it on a dyno and it would still gimme perfect HP and TQ and zero compression troubles!

IPO proved the strength time and time again with SLTT. About 700 hp on a NA block with stock TT pistons.

Re: GTO engine swap..worth it?

Right on Rocker, I'd be more worried a/b that T-case then the engine... my damn SOHC just won't die (not that I want it to, but I've dogged it before... spur of the moment races, while I was on the way home to do an oil change... )

Re: GTO engine swap..worth it?

Well that is a higher mileage engine, so a rebuild might not be that bad of an idea if needed. But before swapping or rebuilding. Why not just check out the compression. See how it is holding up. If it's all good, give it a tune-up and go from there.

Also you're gonna want a fuel controller of some sort with those mods.
