Unhappy Are the Tamiya McLaren MP4/4 and MP4/8 kits rare?

Hey I am new here, I will post some pics of my current builds (Revell Corvette C6, and Tamiya Porsche 911 Turbo 88) and of some of my previous builds.

Anyway, I have looked everywhere for one of these early 90's McLaren MP4 kits so I can make a Senna tribute. But everywhere I look they never have one :-(

I hear they are good kits too. I want it to be my next big project. No online sites ever seem to carry it. I know it is out of production. Any help? Maybe one day I'll get lucky.

Re: Are the Tamiya McLaren MP4/4 and MP4/8 kits rare?

All the Tamiya Senna McLarens were reissued about five years ago. I guess they are starting to get rareish again at the moment. However there are still a few around, so eBay or ringing up different stores is fairly likely to turn something up.

Since Tamiya seem to operate on a once-in-a-blue-moon licensing deal with McLaren I wouldn't expect to see them reissued any time soon. A shame Tamiya hasn’t reissued their other McLarens lately.

And welcome to AF

Ahh SeaBee you are awesome, just went over to F1 Specialties and ordered me a MP4/4 via phone with the tobacco conversion decals. Hope to get it next week.

I am excited now, thanks for the help. Big project comming up!

BTW, what flourecent red should I use for the stripes? Is there one paint manufacturer that makes an accurate flourecent red? Or should I use the decals provided?

I think you will get pretty close with Tamiya's own flourescent red, TS-36.
Haven't tried it myself yet so I might be wrong.
I'm supposed to use it on a MP4/8 but hasn't got around finishing it yet.
Maybe someone else can tell both of us if this is a proper colour to use?

Re: Are the Tamiya McLaren MP4/4 and MP4/8 kits rare?

We had a discussion about Marlboro McLaren flourescent red just recently. I've heard it said a few times that TS-36 is a good match for the kit decals. So probably the best way to go if you are going to use the red numbers and such.

TS 36, as stated above! There have been some talk of spraying x layers of TS 49, then Y layers of TS36, esp on the 1:12 scale kit, but for 1:20 TS36 seems pretty darn spot on.
On the MP4/5B they supplied optional decals for the red bits, which I used and it went on just great.

Glad to have helped, enjoy the build!
