PS Pump -- Help ASAP PLEASE!!

'95 Protege 1.5 L

Bought a reman pump and tried to install it. Drained reservoir, removed reservoir to pump hose, removed belt, removed adjusting mechanism. Left the high pressure line connected thinking it would be easier to get to the banjo fitting with the pump out.

Imagine my disappointment when I tried to remove the long single bolt that holds the pump in. The RS inner fender is too close and there isn't enough room for the bolt to clear the mounting bracket.

Has anybody out there made this repair? Is there some way to get this bolt out besides jacking the engine up a few inches? Is there an easy way to jack up the engine?

Please help if you can as this is my daughter's car and she is headed back to college on Sunday. If I can't get it fixed, she gets to take the Rodeo...

Thanks!

While I've never worked on a 95 Protege, I am wondering if there is any way you could loosen the engine mount and either crank the engine up or down from underneath. This technique is quite common when servicing vehicles with transversally mounted engines. Another method might be to remove the entire bracket that the pump is attached to if you can swing the pump out of the way enough to reveal any bracket attachment fastners. A good service manual either purchased new or from a public library might also point you in the right direction.
