1 CEL P0733 87 Villager, 28K

Hello everyone. We picked up this car in Oct after my father-in-law passed, drove it back from Jupiter, FL to San Antonio, TX no-stop w/ no problems. CEL came on today. I reviewed a previous post mentioning the Throttle Position Sensor as a possible culprit. This is my wifes car, she hasn't expressed hear unusual sounds or the car doing "weird" stuff.

Gas millage is ok, no problems with accelerating, can this be a fluke? Should I reset the OBC and see if it reads the same error?

Appreciate your thoughts, guidance.

I assume you meant 97 villager. The 2 most common reasons for the light is a rotted 2" rubber hose between the egr valve and egr back pressure tranducer valve or the rear oxygen sensor. The tps are usually reliable on these vans. The light will turn off if the pcm doesn't detect any faults after 3 driving cycles.

Thanks! Sorry to sound dumb, but I take it driving cycles = times the car is turned on? If after 3 it goes off, consider it a fluke? or should we proceed with checking the items above regardless?

I would check the 2" rubber hose because that is a VERY common problem on the villager. There is also a technical bulletin for the rear o2 sensor causing the cel. To be really sure you would need to scan the codes. The cel turns on if it detects the same fault twice,so your light will probably come back on if you clear it.
Driving cycle=van run with certain values established-eng temp/rpm/vehicle speed/etc..

The rubber hose connects to the bottom of the egr back pressure transducer and then to a small diameter steal line that goes to the egr valve. The rear O2 sensor is mounted behind the catalytic converter. I would scan the codes before throwing expensive parts at it.

Go down to autozone and have them delete the code if it comes back then you will need to advise the current status of the vehicle and we will move from there. The code means that there is incorrect gear ratio for two of teh ddrive gears in the tranny. You may just have a bad or going bad TPS sensor. Look in the villager forum for TPS and your code you will see it has been adressed b4.

Well...now I'm a little confused. The CEL went off before I had a chance to get the tube replaced (it sure is in a weird place to reach). The only thing that occurred is my spouse filled up the tank--but I had dbl checked the cap to tighten...I thought. I've noticed no other problems with the car shifting, or revving high, etc. when accelerating.

Is this a case of no CEL news is good CEL news??
