Junkyard Engine no start

I got this car from my dad after him hydroid the engine by going threw a large puddle.

I bought and put in a junk yard engine and have tried my best to diagnose it myself. The car has been sitting for about one year like this in my drive way. I have looked at all the fuses that I can find, and they all seem to be ok. I do have spark but not a vary strong one and for a while there I would only get spark from two of the three coils. I have checked the contuity from the ECU to the Coil and the 4 wires are in tact. The car doesn’t have very good compression (50-70 or so) but when I put some oil into the cylinders I can get 200psi across the board. I replaced the timing belt when I put in the engine and set it to the marks, the old belt was off a little bit (2 or 3 teeth). I don’t have a fuel presser tester, but after I turn the engine over I can depress the fuel rail and get a squirt. I soivon out the gas and replaced it with some new gas, but still not even a pop.

I don’t know if the crank sensor (faraday sensor) uses the flywheel or the torque converter to make its decision. If so it’s possible that when I put it back in I moved it off a little bit.


When I first put in the engine I tried to start it with the new timing belt in the same position as the old one (just a little off, I made some markings), and it would not start so I used some ether and it stared but sounded horrible. Though I hate to say, it sounded like one would imagine pistons hitting vales sounds like. Although it sounds fairly good when I turn it over now I don’t know if I have bent valves or not, if I had bent valves could I get 200 psi with the aid of oil?

What I also wonder is if the sensors are not ok would the ECU still send out the single to the coil to spark or would it not spark at all. I have also bought and returned a junkyard ECU because it did the same thing. My uncle has a vary powerful snap on car scanner and he was not able establish a data link with the ECU.

Any Ideas or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

If you can get 200 PSI by putting some oil in the cylinders then the Valves are fine, although i can't say much for the rings of that engine if the compression is 50-70 PSI across the board, that is way too low for them engines, 120-150 is about the norm.

If the cam or crank triggers are bad (Both read the engine position with a tone wheel attatched to the drivers side cam pulley / crank flywheel) the PCM will not send current to the coil for spark or pulse the injectors.

If the Snap-On tool won't read the comunication for the PCM then take it to a Dealer and see if their DRB will, your uncles tool might not be compatible with the electronics.
